Sitting
it out -- Great - my parents were off out for the night. This
meant a blissful evening with Wendy, the teenage babysitter; all
kohl-rimmed eyes and a stash of Jackie magazines tucked under
her arm. Wendy wouldn’t usher me to bed at boring old 8.30;
she’d give me complicated hairstyles and let me stay up
late, watching smoochy kissing on grown-up telly.

Diary of a Second
(Surprise!) Pregnancy -- Our first child was planned -- it
took six months to conceive, which felt like forever at the time.
The second came by surprise. "Our love child" is what
my husband dubbed it and our "birth control mistake"
was my grumpy response. I wanted a second child, but a surprise
pregnancy -- as well as a second pregnancy -- can bring conflicting
emotions. Here, a little of what I went through, jotted down so
that other women battling ambivalence might relate.
